Halitosis – The Silent Killer

Tuesday, September 26, 2017 03:12 PM

It’s hard to avoid the acute embarrassment you feel when people turn away as you speak to them. It isn’t you that’s the problem; it’s your foul smelling breath! Halitosis is the not-so-silent social killer and many people are completely unaware of their problem.

How Does It Happen?

Bad breath tends to originate in the mouth though the tonsils, sinuses and even the stomach can also be contributory factors. When you chew and digest food, bits of it can get caught in the crevices and nooks of the mouth. Failure to thoroughly clean them will see these pieces of debris broken down by bacteria and the result is a nasty smell.

Bacteria loves to reside on the back of the tongue and this area is often overlooked by people during their daily oral care regime. Nasal discharge dripping down the back of the throat coats the back of the tongue and is fed on by the bacteria that live there.

How Do I Detect It?

Halitosis is not easy to detect as the classic breathing into your hands strategy is very ineffective. For a start, you could just have smelly hands! Additionally, you are used to your own smells and will only detect new odours.

You can ask a trusted friend or family member to give an honest assessment or else you can scrape the back of your tongue with a plastic implement, allow it to dry and then smell it. There are dental clinics in Thailand that will assess your breath odour as part of your check-up.

When it comes to halitosis prevention, there really is no substitute for a solid oral care routine which is performed regularly. This means you should brush twice a day, floss at least once a day, scrape your tongue once a day, use mouthwash, visit your dentist at least once a year and chew sugar-free gum.
